A devastating wildfire on the Greek island of Crete has led to the evacuation of thousands, as fierce flames threaten structures and natural landscapes. The fire, erupting in the southeastern part of the island near Ierapetra on Wednesday afternoon, has placed local authorities and emergency services on high alert. The rapid spread of the fire, fueled by gale-force winds, has endangered homes, tourist facilities, and a fuel station with substantial fuel reserves, highlighting the severe risks to both infrastructure and safety. Over 155 firefighters, supported by water-dropping aircraft, helicopters, and 38 water trucks, are battling the blaze. The firefighting efforts are being bolstered by units from the 3rd EMAK, with additional reinforcements arriving from Athens, including fifty firefighters transported by C130 aircraft to join the frontline defense against the wildfire. The dense smoke and the fire’s swift advancement towards populated and tourist areas have triggered widespread concern, leading to the evacuation of more than 1,500 people to temporary shelters such as the ‘Markos Foniadakis’ closed gym and a School Gymnasium in Ierapetra city. The evacuees include residents and tourists, with a particular focus on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), who have been preemptively transferred to the Ierapetra Hospital. The local community and private entities have rallied to provide support, offering accommodations, resources, and water to those affected. An emergency alert message from the 112 service has explicitly advised immediate evacuation from five settlements, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The wildfire in Crete is part of a broader pattern of fires across Greece, including incidents in Chalkidiki and Kythira, which have collectively stretched emergency response capabilities and prompted widespread evacuations. As the battle against the flames continues, concerns mount over the potential for further damage and the impact on the island’s tourism, which is vital to the local economy. The situation remains critical, with all efforts focused on containing the fire and ensuring the safety of the island’s residents and visitors.
