In a tragic sequence of events that has shocked the nation, at least two people have been confirmed dead with over 30 individuals injured following the collapse of a bridge over the Indrayani River in Pune, Maharashtra. The incident, which saw several individuals being swept away by the river, occurred shortly after the region was hit by other devastating events, including an Air India flight crash and a helicopter crash involving Hindu pilgrims. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has announced a comprehensive search operation to locate those missing, revealing that six people have been rescued so far, with 32 injured, six of whom are in critical condition. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is spearheading the search and rescue operation amidst this period of national tragedy.

According to reports from आज तक and Dainik Bhaskar, the disaster struck on a Sunday afternoon in the Kundmal area of Maval Tehsil, Pune, when a 30-year-old iron bridge, already in a dilapidated state due to heavy rainfall and strong currents, collapsed, plunging people into the raging Indrayani River below. The collapse resulted in immediate fatalities and numerous injuries, with rescue operations quickly mobilized by NDRF teams, fire brigades, local police, and volunteers. The Chief Minister has expressed his sorrow over the incident and announced financial assistance of 5 lakh rupees to the families of the deceased, along with covering medical expenses for the injured. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has stated that an investigation would be conducted, and those found responsible will be penalized, alongside a directive for structural audits of all old bridges in the state.

The tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by dilapidated infrastructure, especially in areas prone to natural calamities such as heavy rainfall. The incident at the Kundmala tourist spot, which resulted in 4 deaths and 18 injuries, with 51 individuals rescued, underscores the urgent need for stringent safety measures and regular maintenance of public structures to prevent such catastrophes. The state government’s response and the ongoing search and rescue operations reflect a concerted effort to address the immediate crisis, even as the community mourns the loss and grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event.
