Kenyan police have made a shocking arrest in a case involving a suspected serial killer who has confessed to murdering 42 women. The suspect, identified as Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, was apprehended near a bar in Nairobi while watching the Euro final. The head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, described the suspect as a ‘psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life.’ The bodies of the victims, nine of which have been recovered so far, were found in a quarry near the suspect’s house. Autopsies are currently underway in Nairobi to determine the cause of death. Two families have already identified their missing relatives among the victims.
The suspect’s chilling confession revealed that the murders took place between 2022 and last Thursday. Shockingly, he claimed that his first victim was his own wife, whom he strangled to death before dismembering her body and disposing of it at the same site. The suspect also admitted to having ‘carnal knowledge’ of some of his victims.
The arrest came after analysis of a phone belonging to one of the victims led the police to the suspect. A second suspect, who was found with a phone belonging to another victim, has also been apprehended. During a search of the suspect’s house, located just 100 meters from where the bodies were discovered, authorities found a machete, nylon sacks, rope, industrial rubber gloves, a pink female handbag, and female underwear.
The discoveries have sent shockwaves through the country, with residents of the Mukuru slum area in the south of the capital left horrified by the gruesome findings. Tensions ran high at the crime scene, leading to clashes between furious residents and the police, who resorted to using tear gas to disperse the crowd.
This case has once again put the spotlight on the Kenyan police and added pressure on President William Ruto, who is already grappling with widespread anti-government protests. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating whether there was any police connection to the killings, as the dump site is in close proximity to a police station. IPOA is also looking into a possible ‘failure to act to prevent’ the murders.
Human rights groups have called for expedited investigations into reports of enforced disappearances, urging authorities to thoroughly examine any potential links between this case and other missing persons. As the investigation continues, autopsies on the victims are being conducted to gather more evidence. The suspect remains in custody, and the police are determined to bring justice to the families of the victims and ensure the safety of the community.
