NATO defense ministers have approved an operational plan to expand support for Ukraine, which includes a greater role for the Alliance in supplying weapons and training Ukrainian military forces. The plan envisions that in the future, the Alliance will take on international coordination of arms supplies and training for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The coordination support headquarters for Kyiv will be located in Wiesbaden, Germany, where a US military base is already operating. Additionally, logistical hubs will be established in the eastern part of the Alliance. Nearly 700 military personnel from NATO member and partner countries are expected to be involved in these efforts. Hungary, which had been blocking the approval of the plan, lifted its veto in exchange for a promise that it would not participate in the training of Ukrainians and would finance the supply of weapons. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that these efforts will not make NATO a party to the conflict, but they will strengthen the support for Ukraine in defending its right to self-defense. The plan will be launched at the Washington Summit in July, providing long-term support to Ukraine’s Armed Forces without involving NATO directly in the conflict.
