A military plane carrying Malawi’s vice president, Saulos Chilima, and nine others has gone missing. The aircraft disappeared from radar after departing from the capital city of Lilongwe on Monday morning. Despite efforts by aviation authorities, the plane has not been located, prompting a search and rescue operation. Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera addressed the nation, stating that soldiers have begun combing through a mountainous region in the country’s north. The flight was en route from Lilongwe to Mzuzu when aviation authorities warned the plane to turn around due to poor visibility caused by bad weather. The president assured the public that every available resource is being used to find the plane and expressed hope for survivors. The United States, Britain, Norway, and Israel have offered support, including specialized technologies, for the search. Vice President Saulos Chilima, who first took office in 2014, was on his way to attend the funeral of former attorney general and minister of justice, Raphael Kasambara. The reason for the aircraft’s disappearance is still unknown, and efforts to locate the plane are ongoing.
