NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has rebuked allies for their tepid support of Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Stoltenberg emphasized the dire consequences of failing to support Ukraine, both for the Ukrainians and for NATO’s own security. Russian forces have been making steady gains against Ukrainian defenders who are suffering from shortages of weapons and ammunition due to delays in sending supplies. Stoltenberg stated that ‘when we’re not delivering as we should, Ukrainians are paying the price. But also, us.’ He warned that the biggest cost would be if Russia wins in Ukraine, as it would require enormous amounts of money for NATO allies to invest in security. Supporting Ukraine is seen as the best way to ensure our security,’ he added. Stoltenberg acknowledged that allies have recently stepped up their pledges and deliveries, especially following the US decision to approve $61 billion in arms aid, as well as new packages from the UK, Canada, and other allies. However, he stressed the need to turn announcements into deliveries, as time is of the essence. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also highlighted the urgency of receiving arms and ammunition to stabilize the front lines. He specifically mentioned the need for 155-caliber artillery ammunition, long-range weapons, and anti-aircraft defenses, primarily Patriot systems. NATO’s invitation to Ukraine to its birthday party did not come with a fresh pledge on membership. While the door is officially open for Ukraine, there is no signal from the US or Germany that they are prepared to shift their position on Ukraine’s membership. NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg stated that all allies agree that Ukraine will become a member and that they need to continue moving Ukraine closer to NATO membership. However, there is a lack of diplomatic momentum to find additional language beyond last year’s lukewarm pledge for Ukraine to join NATO. As NATO and its allies navigate this complex situation, the timely delivery of pledged supplies to Ukraine remains crucial for stabilizing the front lines and ensuring the security of both Ukraine and NATO.
