A powerful winter storm has hit the northeastern United States, causing travel disruptions and school closures. New York City experienced its first significant snowfall in two years, leading to flight cancellations and transportation challenges. Over 1,220 flights were canceled, with 43 percent of flights at New York’s domestic LaGuardia airport and one in five flights at JFK affected. Schools in New York City were forced to close, and authorities urged the public to avoid driving. Despite the disruptions, some New Yorkers made their way to Central Park to enjoy the winter wonderland. The storm, named Lorraine, brought heavy snowfall to the region, with Hampton Township in New Jersey receiving 13 inches of snow and Chester in upstate New York seeing over 11 inches. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for over 32 million people in the affected region, stating that the heavy snowfall would result in significant travel disruptions. Coastal flooding is also expected along portions of the East Coast. Schools in New York City were forced to close, and transport operators scrambled to provide service after authorities called on the public to avoid driving.
