Ukraine’s new army chief, Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, has been appointed as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), replacing Valeriy Zaluzhny. The decision, made by President Volodymyr Zelensky, aims to bring renewal and a unified vision to the country’s military leadership. Syrskyi, a highly experienced combat commander, is expected to improve troop rotation, utilize new technology, and enhance the defense forces. However, his appointment has sparked divergent opinions among the military, with some acknowledging his successful operations and others labeling him a ‘butcher.’ Despite the mixed views, Syrskyi has already outlined his main tasks, which include detailed planning, logistics, and the use of unmanned systems. The change in command comes at a crucial time as Ukraine faces challenges such as a shortage of manpower and inadequate supplies of Western weapons. Meanwhile, Zaluzhny has been awarded the Golden Star Award, the country’s highest honor, by President Zelensky.
