Israeli airstrikes have killed 184 people and wounded over 589 others in Gaza since the truce expired on Friday morning, according to Gaza health officials. Most of those killed were children and women. The Israeli bombardment was most intense in the southern areas of Khan Younis and Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been sheltering. The UN aid chief has called for a humanitarian ceasefire to allow aid deliveries into Gaza and the release of remaining hostages. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes were also reported near Damascus, Syria, with no casualties reported.
In response to the escalating conflict, Turkish media has launched a campaign against Israel. Several media outlets have published articles with the same message stating, “Israel is attacking Gaza for 38 days, and UEFA and FIFA remain silent and do not impose sanctions against it.” UEFA and FIFA have yet to respond to the situation, and the Turkish media has highlighted the case of Russia, which was banned from participating in UEFA tournaments from the early days of the war with Ukraine that began in February of last year.
US Secretary of State Antony Lincoln, who is visiting Israel for the fourth time since the outbreak of the war, said that the US “supports and will continue to support Israel’s efforts to do everything it can to prevent Hamas from repeating the horrors of October 7th, which means that Hamas cannot remain in power in Gaza and cannot maintain the capabilities to carry out such attacks.” Lincoln added, “Israel understands the importance of defending its citizens and providing humanitarian assistance. I told the Prime Minister and the War Cabinet: I am confident in the intention, but the outcome is what matters. Regarding the Palestinian Authority, I told Abu Mazen that reforms and strengthening of the authority are needed in order to meet the aspirations of the Palestinian people, such as fighting corruption and ensuring freedom of the press.”
As the conflict continues to escalate, the international community is calling for a ceasefire to allow aid deliveries into Gaza and the release of remaining hostages. In the meantime, the US has expressed its support for Israel’s efforts to prevent Hamas from repeating the horrors of October 7th. It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days.
