Today, the US and European governments are pressuring Israel to delay its ground invasion of Gaza in order to allow for the release of hostages held by Hamas. Negotiations with Hamas through Qatar are currently underway, with signs that Hamas may agree to release some civilian hostages without demanding the release of prisoners from Israel. US President Joe Biden has agreed that Israel should delay a potential ground invasion until more hostages can be released. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also expressed concern for the humanitarian impact of the conflict and called for the protection of civilians and access to affected areas.
In response to these developments, Israeli Minister Benny Gantz addressed the public, saying: ‘We have only just begun. We are at the beginning of a meticulously planned event in our history, and the greatness of Israeli solidarity is revealed. This will be a difficult and lengthy war. I am here, we are all here, to rebuild, to strengthen, and to remain here safe and united. The foundations we build will be stronger. I promise you. This is our second war of resilience, and we will emerge victorious. Because we remember where we came from, why we came, and we know well where we are going and why we are doing this.’
In response to the IDF Chief of Staff’s statement that ‘even with limitations, we are attacking wherever there are Hamas leaders’, Haaretz published an article titled ‘13.10.2023 – Letters to the Editor – Haaretz’, which said that ‘the IDF’s actions are in direct violation of international law and human rights conventions, and must be stopped immediately’.
As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, the US and European governments are pushing for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The international community is watching closely to see how the situation will develop, and what steps will be taken to ensure the safety of civilians and the release of hostages.
