Dozens of people were killed and many more were injured in a horrific drone attack on a military academy in Syria. The attack occurred after a graduation ceremony at the academy, which was located in the province of Homs. The source of the explosives remains unknown, and the area was left filled with corpses.

The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the attack, expressing regret for the deaths of civilians and soldiers who were attending the ceremony. The Syrian Ministry of Defense also issued a statement, declaring that it would respond with all force and determination to the perpetrators of the attack.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the attack has resulted in the death of 112 people, including 21 civilians, 11 women, and a child, while 120 others were injured, some of them critically. Turkey has also carried out strikes against sites and facilities in areas under the control of the Kurdish self-administration in northeastern Syria, resulting in the killing of at least nine people.

The spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, expressed ‘grave concern’ over the attack on the military college, while also expressing concern ‘about retaliatory shelling by government forces on several sites in northwestern Syria.’ He strongly condemned ‘all acts of violence’ and urged ‘all parties to respect their commitments’ and the ‘necessity of protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure.’

The Syrian government has declared an official mourning period of three days starting from Friday. No party has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, although jihadist groups that control parts of Syrian territory sometimes use armed drones.

The tragic attack highlights the ongoing violence and instability in Syria, and serves as a reminder of the need for peace and security in the region.
