Sources: TGCOM, Il Sole 24 ORE – IT. Tragedy struck in Mestre, in the province of Venice, on the evening of Tuesday, October 3, when a bus full of foreign tourists plunged from the Vempa overpass. According to the prefecture, the definitive toll of the tragedy is 21 dead, including two children and a minor girl, and 15 injured. The victims, who were returning to Marghera after visiting Venice, included Ukrainians, French, Croats, and Germans. The vehicle fell approximately 30 meters after touching the electricity wires, and one of the initial hypotheses for the accident is a possible illness of the driver, a 40-year-old Italian who was also among the victims.

Among the 15 injured individuals taken to hospitals in the region, four of them, in intensive care, have not yet been identified. Seven of the 21 victims have already been identified, including an Austrian woman believed to be the mother of two girls, aged 13 and 3, who are hospitalized in Treviso in non-serious condition.

The Venice Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the terrible accident, examining the security camera footage focused on the overpass to better understand the dynamics of the crash. The Chief Prosecutor, Bruno Cherchi, also arrived at the scene of the disaster in the evening.

The Venice mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, declared, “An immense tragedy, mourning declared for the city.” The driver of the vehicle, Alberto Rizzotto, a 40-year-old from Treviso, was described by his colleagues as an experienced driver who had been working for 7 years. His last message on Facebook, posted an hour and a half before the tragedy, read, “Shuttle to Venice.”

The cause of the crash is yet to be determined, and the investigation is ongoing.
