Sources: Daily Mail, Bahamas Tribune – AU. Tragedy struck Shalom College in Bundaberg, Queensland, on Tuesday morning when beloved religious studies teacher James Kiernan collapsed at his desk and died of a heart attack. Despite the best efforts of three colleagues who performed CPR and the arrival of paramedics, they were unable to revive him. The 50-year-old teacher had been at the college since 2021 and was fondly remembered by the school’s principal, Dan McMahon, as a “much loved member of staff” who was “dedicated to his Catholic faith.”
Friends and colleagues of Mr. Kiernan paid tribute to him on social media, with one friend and colleague, Dale O’Connell, describing him as “one of the most genuine blokes I have ever had the honour to call a mate and colleague.” The school is now offering counseling services to staff and students to help them cope with the loss.
At Queen’s College in Nassau, the students, faculty, and staff faced the heartbreaking loss of another beloved student leader, Dario Rahming, who passed away suddenly on Saturday. During a special assembly held in his memory, they grappled with the difficult question: why him?
Dario was an exemplary student who consistently achieved honor roll status, and he was actively involved in the Student Christian Movement, the basketball team, and the Junkanoo club. His homeroom teacher, Michell Peters, described him as a son to her, while his other homeroom teacher, Carlene Hanna, described him as the classroom’s prayer warrior and a big brother to his peers.
Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander, who is also Dario’s godfather, led a moment of silence for the young man during a press event unrelated to the incident. He mentioned that the police are awaiting the autopsy report to determine the cause of death.
Mr. Kiernan is survived by his wife, three daughters, and grandchildren, while Dario Rahming will be remembered by his friends and family for his devotion to God and his exemplary character. Shalom College and Queen’s College are now providing resources to help students and staff cope with their grief.
The world has lost two of the good guys, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of James Kiernan and Dario Rahming.
