Suspected Terror Attack in Ankara, Turkey

Sources: Hürriyet, BirGün. A suspected terror attack occurred in the capital city of Turkey, Ankara, as a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device outside the Turkish parliament. Another man was killed in a shootout with police near the entrance to the interior affairs ministry. Two police officers were injured during the attack. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that two terrorists attempted a bomb attack in front of the entrance gate of the Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Security in Ankara at around 09:30. Police officers Erkan Karataş and Alim Reis Demirel, who neutralized the two terrorists, were injured. Yerlikaya, who visited the injured police officers in the hospital, stated, “We condemn terrorism, they will never achieve their goals. Alim Reis, our brother Erkan, and their colleagues prevented this attack. We witnessed a great act of heroism this morning.” Yerlikaya also reported that the injured police officers are not in critical condition. Furthermore, it was determined that the attackers had stolen a light commercial vehicle with license plate number 38 TP 962 from a veterinarian in Develi district of Kayseri, killing him. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç also condemned the attack, stating, “An immediate criminal investigation has been initiated by our Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the heinous attack. The investigation will be conducted thoroughly under the coordination of the Deputy Chief Prosecutor assigned to the case. These attacks will not hinder Turkey’s fight against terrorism in any way. Our fight against terrorism will continue with even greater determination.” Ankara Police Department also issued a warning message before the detonation of the suspicious packages, stating, “Controlled explosions will be carried out by our bomb disposal teams with necessary security measures taken regarding the incidents of suspicious packages in Kızılay Güvenpark and the vicinity of the General Directorate of Security. We kindly request our citizens not to panic.”
