Tragedy Strikes as Bus Carrying High School Band Crashes
Tragedy struck on Thursday when a bus carrying members of a high school marching band in New York state crashed, resulting in the deaths of two adult women and several injuries. The bus, a private coach carrying 44 passengers, including 40 freshmen from Farmingdale High School, was en route to a music event for band camp at Pine Forest Camp in Greeley, Pennsylvania.
According to a press conference held by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a “faulty front tire” is believed to be the cause of the crash. The bus crashed on Interstate 84 in Wawayanda, Orange County, New York, at approximately 1:12 p.m. local time.
The two deceased adults have been identified as Gina Pellettiere, 43, from Massapequa, New York, and Beatrice Ferrari, 77, from Farmingdale. Five students remain in critical condition, while dozens of others suffered minor injuries.
Governor Hochul expressed her condolences and highlighted the fear and chaos experienced by the students. “I do want to acknowledge some incredible people who put on their uniforms every day when they’re in our time of need and my God this was a time of need,” she said. “There are a lot of families that need some love tonight. I will extend that from 20 million New Yorkers.”
Jonathan Eugenio, father of trombone player Anthony Eugenio who was on the bus, shared that his son sustained injuries. “He’s got a big bump on his leg. He’s got blood on his pants from somebody else. The person next to him was covered in blood,” Eugenio said.
The students on the other five buses returned to Farmingdale, with the district arranging for them to meet grief counselors along the way. Additionally, all after-school activities at Farmingdale High School were canceled on Thursday following the crash.
Interstate 84 will remain closed for several more hours while the collision site is under investigation. Those with information are urged to contact the State Police at 845-344-5300.
This tragedy serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing our loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this tragedy.
