Canada Has Evidence Linking Indian Diplomats to Killing of Sikh Activist
Canada is believed to have evidence linking Indian officials and diplomats to the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, according to reports from The Guardian and CBC News. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that communications involving Indian officials were found during the investigation into Nijjar’s murder. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called on India to cooperate in uncovering the truth behind the killing, while the US expressed concern and offered support to Canada.

The Guardian reported that the trove of information gathered in the months-long investigation included communications involving Indian officials, including Indian diplomats working inside Canada. The Guardian was unable to independently verify the CBC’s reporting. In response, India has suspended visa processing in Canada and both countries have suspended trade talks.

The US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the allegations were a “matter of concern” for the White House and that officials were in talks with their Indian counterparts. Sullivan said that there is “not some special exemption you get for actions like this” and that “regardless of the country, we will stand up and defend our basic principles and we will also consult closely with allies like Canada as they pursue their law enforcement and diplomatic process.”

Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has rejected retaliatory measures, saying “This is not about geopolitics. This is about Canada, the safety of Canadians in Canada. This is about the rule of law.” India has rejected the allegations as “absurd” and updated its travel advisory for Canada, warning its citizens to take “extreme caution”.

Sources have indicated that Canada has both human and signals intelligence in the investigation, some of which was provided by an unnamed ally in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. Prime Minister Trudeau has not confirmed his government will share the evidence, but has said he was not seeking to escalate the row between the two countries and called on India to cooperate with Canadian authorities to “uncover the truth” behind the killing.

The row between Canada and India has escalated, with the US expressing concern and offering support to Canada. The two sides have engaged in a tit-for-tat expulsion of top diplomats and announced they were also suspending trade talks valued at tens of billion of dollars.

The US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated that the US is deeply concerned and wants to see the investigation continue and the perpetrators brought to justice. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has stated that the government is focused on bringing the killers to justice.
