Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for Russia to be excluded from the UN Security Council due to its aggressive war against Ukraine. According to German publication Tagesschau, Zelensky made the call prior to his first personal address at the General Assembly in New York, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He emphasized that it is unfair for a country that has unleashed an aggressive war against Ukraine to remain a permanent member of the UN Security Council with veto power.

Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and has the right to veto. The aggressor state has repeatedly used this right to block decisions related to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. On September 19th, Zelensky is expected to address the need to strengthen assistance to Ukraine in defending against Russian aggression, as well as the Ukrainian formula for peace and the establishment of a tribunal for military criminals from Russia.

Prior to his speech, Zelensky visited Ukrainian servicemen who were injured on the front lines and are undergoing treatment at a Staten Island clinic. He expressed the importance of his words being heard during the visit. Zelensky also plans to attend a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine, though it is unclear if he will remain seated if Russia’s foreign minister speaks.

The US Congress is considering providing additional military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine in light of the situation. It is clear that the international community must continue to support Ukraine in repelling Russia’s invasion in order to ensure the safety of its citizens and the stability of the region.
