Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk at the Tesla factory in California to discuss the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and the legal revolution. During the meeting, Netanyahu expressed his hope that Musk would find ways to clamp down on antisemitism and other forms of hatred while still respecting the First Amendment. Musk has defended his stance on free speech but has threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for defamation. The meeting also touched on Netanyahu’s proposal for legislation, which he believes is necessary to restore Israel to a stronger democracy. Meanwhile, outside the Tesla factory, a demonstration against the legal revolution took place, with the participation of many Israelis.

At the beginning of the meeting with Musk, Netanyahu said, “I call it a blessing and a curse. When Moses led the children of Israel to the promised land, he told them that they would have to choose between a blessing and a curse. So choose the blessing of life and not the curse of death. And I think humanity needs to make a similar choice now. The advantages of artificial intelligence are amazing, in medicine, genetics, robots caring for the elderly, efficiency in factories, an end to traffic congestion on land and in the air, all of these are real promises inherent in artificial intelligence. But in the same breath, there is the curse, a threat to democracy, unreliable information or brainwashing, or machines controlling humans.”

Musk responded, “I think the answer is yes. When you see how the servers or the upper-level computers work, with generative artificial intelligence, it is something that can be tracked and identified.” Netanyahu added that, “What we needed to do in the cyber field was not a model, so we went along the way and discovered how to make Israel a leader in cyber to protect ourselves. In the field of artificial intelligence, there is no replication model, so we look to you. I want to ask what a democratic country needs to do, and Israel will always be a democratic country, but what needs to be done to control this unleashed field? I made a blessing, but it comes with a curse. I think this is the most important invention in our lifetime and maybe in history, and we don’t have much time to deal with shaping our future. It interests me both for my country and for everyone.”

Netanyahu is expected to begin his diplomatic visit to the United States today (Monday), where he will meet with US President Joe Biden, as well as with Elon Musk. According to former Israeli ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, “He recently clashed with the head of the league against defamation. Some of Musk’s statements were perceived as anti-Semitic. I have heard criticism from several Jewish sources in the United States about Netanyahu’s decision to meet with him. Musk’s gain from this meeting is greater than Netanyahu’s.”

This news was reported by the Israeli newspapers Globes and Maariv Online. Netanyahu and Musk’s meeting was an important milestone in the discussion of the implications of artificial intelligence, and the protests outside the Tesla factory demonstrate the importance of the issue. Netanyahu and Musk have yet to come to an agreement on how to regulate the use of AI, but it is clear that the discussion is ongoing and will continue to be an important topic in the future.
