Floods in Libya Leave Thousands Dead and Missing

Floods in Libya have resulted in the death of over 5,300 people, prompting calls for urgent humanitarian support. According to reports from الجزيرة نت, entire neighborhoods in the Libyan city of Derna have been devastated, leaving thousands dead and missing. The actual number of casualties is still uncertain, but authorities have requested assistance in the rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, according to صحيفة الشرق الأوسط, the search and rescue operations for the victims of the floods have entered their third day, with the participation of local, Arab, and international search and rescue teams. The human and material losses continue to rise, with medical official Abdul Rahim Mazek estimating that the numbers indicate the existence of 20,000 deaths due to the floods. Hospitals are no longer able to accommodate the bodies of the victims.

Brigadier General Ahmed Al-Mismari, the official spokesperson for the ‘National Army’ led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, confirmed that the number of victims has reached over 7,000, and warned that the number may increase rapidly despite the ongoing search and rescue operations. He also affirmed the continued arrival of relief convoys and local support from Arab, international, and local countries to the affected areas.

On the other hand, the Prime Minister stated that the responsibility ‘requires us to seek international assistance from all countries and organizations without exception, as the disaster is overwhelming and exceeds Libya’s capabilities.’ He also received phone calls from King Abdullah II of Jordan and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, expressing their condolences for the victims of the hurricane.

Tarek Al-Kharraz, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior in the ‘Stability’ government, announced that the number of victims has exceeded 6,000, while Mohammed Abu Lamusha, the media official at the Ministry of Interior, informed the Libyan News Agency that the death toll in Derna has exceeded 5,300, with thousands missing due to the disaster.

The funeral prayer for the victims of the hurricane was held in Tripoli, attended by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah (Unity Government). Dbeibah also stated in a press conference yesterday (Tuesday) that his country is evaluating international aid offers to determine the needed assistance and ensure coordination in rescue efforts.

The urgent humanitarian situation in Derna requires assistance from individuals who understand the logistics involved, as well as trained dogs capable of locating and rescuing people trapped beneath the ground. The plea is for humanitarian aid from those with the necessary expertise and knowledge to effectively address the crisis.
