Article Title: Kilauea Volcano Erupts for Third Time This Year
Article Text:
Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted for the third time this year on Sunday, prompting authorities to issue a “red” warning. The volcano, one of the world’s most active, began erupting in the afternoon, spewing lava and releasing volcanic smog. The eruption was preceded by a period of intense seismic activity and “rapid uplift” of the summit, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The eruption does not pose an immediate threat to residents, though they are advised to avoid breathing in the volcanic particles. Kilauea previously erupted in 2018, causing significant destruction, and in 2019, leading to a series of earthquakes and further destruction.
The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said that the opening phases of eruptions are dynamic and that the gases released by the eruption will lead to “volcanic smog” flowing with the winds, which are expected to further degrade air quality.
Reuters and The Independent have reported on the eruption, with the former citing webcam images showing fissures at the base of the volcano’s crater that are producing lava flows on the surface of the crater floor. The latter reported that the eruption led to the destruction of hundreds of homes and businesses in 2019 and more than 700 homes and other structures in 2018.
Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and is located in a closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. While there is no immediate threat to residents, authorities have raised the volcano alert from watch to warning and the aviation color code from orange to red as they assess the eruption.
